Our office, as well as the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recommends that your child visit the dentist by his/her 1st birthday. You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive.

Please tell your child that the dentist and the nice ladies in the office will be friendly. They will look in the mouth, count the teeth and probably will also brush (polish) the teeth. Your child will receive a new toothbrush and floss and at the conclusion of the dental visit will choose a toy from Snoopy's doghouse! Please refrain from comments such as "Don't worry, it won't hurt" or "It won't be bad". Such phrases may instill needless fear in a young child.

We are interested in our patients learning the importance of oral hygiene in order to help prevent dental problems. Our staff may supervise your child brushing his/her teeth, discuss flossing, polish your child's teeth and apply a topical fluoride. As part of a complete dental examination we may occasionally need a limited number of dental x-rays (rarely before the age of 5 years). Please be assured that dental x-rays will only be taken when necessary.

On a young child's first visit to our office the parent is usually invited into the treatment area. This allows the parent to be available to ask questions about their child's mouth and discuss home dental care.
